1. Keeping Kids Healthy and Fit

While our schools focus primarily on academics, children's ability to learn is compromised if they aren't well rested, well nourished and fit. Long-term health, fitness and mental and physical vitality are the result of good habits and wise choices, many of which are fostered both in the home and in school. Learn practical ideas on what families can do to stay fit and healthy together.

2. Beyond the School Yard Bully

Relational Aggression is a psychological and emotional form of abuse characterized by gossip, teasing, slander and exclusion. Its impact is just as real as physical threats. Learn how to identify this behavior in both girls and boys and positive ways to empower their victims.

3. Understanding No Child Left Behind

Under No Child Left Behind (NCLB), states are working to close the achievement gap and make sure all students, including those who are disadvantaged, achieve academic proficiency. Learn about the basics of NCLB including Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), literacy, accountability, and school report cards.

4. Internet Safety - What You NEED To Know

The internet is a huge information source and a valuable tool for adults and children. But because of it's anonymous nature, it is also a breeding ground for predators. Learn how to keep your child safe in cyberspace and how to talk to your teenager about internet safety.

5. Parenting Skills Tune-Up (En Español)
Parents Reaching Out
This session will be presented in Spanish. Long have parenting skills been viewed only as discipline or stress management skills, but in an ever changing world, parenting skills now mean so much more. In the light of the federal law, No Child Left Behind, "parental involvement" is now required from all parents and in all schools. Parents Reaching Out will redefine "parental skills" and discuss practical and adaptable tips on how to become an effective parent/guardian by becoming more involved in your child's life and education.

6. Understanding and Preventing Eating Disorders... and Getting Help When You Need It!
Dr. Deborah Okon, Clinical Psychologist and faculty member, University of Phoenix
Learn why eating disorders develop, what signs and symptoms suggest that a child/adolescent is developing an eating disorder, what you can do to prevent them and when and how to seek help.

Belén's hometown comedienne and the New Mexico Hispano Entertainers Association's 2007 Comedian of the Year, Virginia Gonzales, shares a bit of humor and comedic tidbits on the town of Belén. She'll have you rolling in the aisles while you're enjoying an enchilada lunch courtesy of Belén Consolidated Schools (only to the first 200 people who pre register) or visiting the exhibits. FFA will also be selling hamburgers for those who want an alternative choice for lunch.

7. Helping Students Succeed in Math

Does your child have a math phobia? Learn how to help your student get through their fears and improve their math skills. Valuable homework help resources will be provided.

8. Bringing Up Those Pesky Difficult Topics
From Belén High School: James Beecher, School-based Health Center Counselor; Peggy Chavez, Health Services and SBHC Coordinator, Kristen Gorbach, Teen Specialist; and Carol Castillo, RN, School Nurse, La Merced Elementary School
This panel presents difficult topics every parent or guardian must discuss with their child. Learn how to talk about substance abuse, behavioral health issues and how parental influence is important to children.

9. Typical Growth and Development

Did an alien take over your child or is the behavior change you're seeing just part of typical development? Good parents have lots of questions! Learn about normal stages of child development, and when you should be concerned.

10. Just Say Know: Using Knowledge as a Tool Against Drug Use

Can you tell when your child is involved with drugs? What do you know about the drugs youth are using these days? Are you famimilar with the dangers of prescription drugs, inhalants and steroids? And what is it about our culture that makes alcohol, the number one abused substance of youth. Learn about the health consequences, warning signs and what can be done to counter substance abuse in youth.

11. Working Through the Special Education Maze

Are you lost in a maze of paperwork and processes trying to do what is best for your special needs child? Hear two different viewpoints on how to support students with special needs in a school setting. You will leave with many ideas on how to work with the schools to promote your student's success.

Gangs, they're out there. What do you know about them? Receive guidance on how to talk to your children about gangs and what you can do to keep your children safe.

16. Testing 1, 2, 3

Since the beginning of public schooling, educators have used some type of testing to measure students' skills. The product of testing is a score, a "yardstick" which compares an individual student with others and/or which documents a student's progress. Learn about the different types of tests, scoring and how this information is used and can help you help your child.
