5. PASS Toolkit
Most students can’t learn when they come to school hungry, sick, hurt or emotionally upset. Healthy kids make better learners. We also know that educated kids are healthier and become healthier adults. Positive Assistance for Student Success (PASS) is an approach that is based on case management functions. It builds on student and family strengths and helps students and families find solutions to their problems.
The PASS Toolkit provides a structured approach to help any school program that works with students and their families who have many challenges to learning and succeeding. It is designed to be easy to follow – and should increase the capacity of school district staff to serve in the role of advisor and coach for students and their families with complex needs. |

3. RISK: Why Even Good Kids Can Make Bad Decisions
Over the past decade, research has indicated that human brains continue to grow well into the mid 20s. As a result, several of the key areas of the brain that help control impulsive behavior are not fully developed during adolescence. This is a key when teens are faced with decisions that could have extremely dangerous and life changing consequences. This is why parents and youth need to understand and have specific tools to help counter some of the RISK. This program will ignite discussion among children, parents and teachers and will empower and support young people to discover solutions to life-threatening behavior and situations. Parents, educators and youth should fully understand how the adolescent brain is still developing into the mid 20’s and thus find ways to make healthy decisions. Attendees will receive ideas for discussions and activities for students and adults around this issue, a copy of the DVD and the viewer guide for use in the classroom or for other venues. |

   1. Evaluation: After School
Improving afterschool program quality must begin with a commitment on the part of practitioners to examine their programs with a critical eye. A quality program is one that is reflective, willing to improve, change and grow, and believes in successful outcomes for its participants. Moreover, practitioners must understand that improving program quality is an ongoing process. It is upon these concepts that the Elev8 NM Self-Assessment (ELSA) Tool is based. The ELSA Tool is one of few self-assessment instruments available. It is intended to help program leaders and staff, in collaboration with other stakeholders, to better understand the indicators of a high-quality program and reflect on all aspects of their program's operation. In this workshop your team will learn how to implement the ELSA tool to best inform the continuous quality improvement of your program. For those PED funded programs that are required to utilize this tool as a part of the evaluation process for the 2009-2010 school year a timeline for implementing the tool will also be distributed. |
