Sheraton Uptown, Albuquerque

The New Mexico Public Education Department (PED), School and Family Support Bureau is offering assistance to school districts in meeting the requirements of 6.12.6 NMAC School District Wellness Policy.   PED has identified an evaluation and planning tool that will help schools:

  • Support an active School Health Advisory Council.
  • Meet the requirement for planning and implementing effective school health programs.
  • Meet the requirement for evaluating school health programs.

The tool, Creating a Healthy School Using the Healthy School Report Card (HSRC), an “action tool” from the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), is FREE to school site representatives who attend a PED sponsored workshop.  The workshop provides instruction in the use of the tool and essential information for using the ASCD online evaluation software.  PED’s expectation is that attendees will implement the HSRC process at their school site, at a minimum, for the following three characteristics:  Food and Nutrition Services; Physical Education and Physical Activity; and Family and Community Involvement.  PED recommends that all 11 characteristics be implemented as the value of the tool becomes apparent to the school administration, staff, parents and students.

WORKSHOP ATTENDEES RECEIVE

  • A free copy of the PED selected Healthy School Report Card tool and online access to the supporting software (a $100 value).

  • Breakfast and lunch on the day of the workshop.

  • For attendees travelling more than 90 miles to Albuquerque, one night stay at the hotel on Monday, April 12 (All other travel expenses are the responsibility of the school district).

  • Knowledge and skills to use the tool effectively for planning, implementing and evaluating school health programs.

  • Support for an active School Health Advisory Council.

  • Follow-up technical assistance.

WHO MAY ATTEND?

All public and charter schools are eligible to send up to TWO (2) people:

1) The principal or his designee (requires a signed proxy from principal)

2) A representative from the school who will be supporting the implementation of the Healthy School Report Card process. This second representative may be a member of the School Health Advisory Council.

School sites who have attended a previous workshop may attend again as a refresher, but must commit to attending the full workshop and must bring their previously obtained HSRC notebook.
