SPRING into Action features national and local experts including:

Stephen Sroka, PhD

An internationally renown speaker, trainer, author, teacher, and educational consultant, Dr. Sroka has worked in schools worldwide for over 30 years and speaks on a variety of issues including school safety, bullying, brain-based learning, at-risk students, alternative education, parenting, dropout prevention, and leadership building for schools and communities. His accolades include Outstanding School Health Educator Award from the American School Health Association, Disney Outstanding Health Teacher of the Year, and National Teachers Hall of Fame inductee.

In his workshop, Teaching to a Tee, New Mexico Style he shares an exciting, interactive activity that lets you learn about yourself, empathize with the challenges youth face and understand the challenges adults and educators struggle with to be effective.  He does this using an innovative strategy, based on the traditional concept of the vision quest, where youth would go out in nature to find their spiritual identity and transform it into a shield that would provide physical, psychological and spiritual protection. In this activity, a T-shirt symbolizes a shield. The added beauty of this session is that participants experience first-hand a technique they can take back and use in their schools and communities.

Paul G. Young, PhD

As the president and CEO of the National Afterschool Association (NAA) Dr. Young has extensive experience to draw from, including more than 35 years as a teacher and school administrator in Ohio, serving as executive director of a nonprofit organization where he helped develop programs in a community-based facility constructed to house Lancaster’s after-school programs, and serving as the former president of the National Association of Elementary School Principals. He is the author of Principal Matters: 101 Tips for Creating Collaborative Relationships Between Afterschool Programs and School Leaders and Leading After-School Learning Communities - What Principals Need to Know and Be Able To Do.

During his presentation, Aligning the Learning Day: Collaboration Strategies for Principals and Afterschool Program Directors, Dr. Young provides strategies for effective partnerships between afterschool programs and school principals, thereby linking the school day to the afterschool program and increasing student achievement.

Other Programming will include:

  • Youth Development, Corinne Taylor
  • Homeless Children in Afterschool Programs, Joseph P. Sanchez
  • Family Involvement, Renata Witte
  • What To Do With Your Data, Frank Mirabal
