Welcome to the PICAASO Tutor Training Home Page

On January 16, 2010 Susan Deese-Roberts, PhD, professor emerita and instructor at the University of New Mexico, will provide an interactive training on learning styles and their effect on the tutoring relationship.  Tutors affiliated with Supplemental Educational Services or 21st Century Community Learning Centers are encouraged to attend the one-day training.  The training is provided by the Partnership for Improving Collaboration for Academic After-School Outcomes, or the PICAASO grant, in conjunction with Albuquerque Public Schools.

Logistic Information

The training will take place on Saturday, January 16, 2010 and will begin with registration at 8:30 am.  Instruction will occur from 9:00 am - 1:45 pm; continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.  The training will be held at the Albuquerque Public Schools City Center, located at 6400 Uptown Blvd. NE, west of Louisiana and north of I-40.

Programming Information

During this workshop, Dr. Deese-Roberts will share basic principles of the tutoring relationship and how that relationship is impacted by learning modes and learning styles.  Participants will determine their own learning mode and learning style preferences and relate those to their tutoring styles.  The styles will be viewed as part of a learning cycle and participants will learn how that cycle relates to each tutoring experience.  To be successful tutors, participants do not need to know the learning mode or learning style preferences of the students they tutor.  By being aware of their own preferences, they can create a learning environment that works for both the student and tutor. Participants will also be given a copy of The Learning Type Measure, a valuable tool used during the training as well as other resources.
